Safeguarding Children and Young People
The July 2009 Care Quality Commission's (CQC) review of NHS arrangements for safeguarding children and young people raised serious concerns about healthcare staff keeping up to date with training to help them identify and respond to suspected abuse and neglect.
NHS organisations can address these concerns with the new elearning course, 'Safeguarding Children and Young People' through the NLMS. This is an important and timely project to support the work of all healthcare professionals who come into contact with children and young people.
Read more and download the CQC report here.
How to access the elearning through the NLMS
The Safeguarding Children and Young People elearning programme will be pre-loaded into the NLMS course catalogue and available to all NHS staff within an organisation using a small number of implementation steps. Details are available in the new Summary Guide to Implementation, available now.
Access for individuals
Individual NHS staff members should contact their internal trust Training and Development Lead or Safeguarding Children Lead to discuss getting access via the NLMS. Please refer them to the implementation guide below if needed.
Access for Safeguarding Children Leads and Training and Development Leads
Safeguarding Children Leads/Training and Development Leads are advised to liaise with colleagues in their IT, HR and Training and Development departments in order to complete the implementation.

Statutory training requirements
Delivered by e-Learning for Healthcare (e-LfH) in partnership with the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), the elearning aims to meet statutory training requirements so that healthcare providers can ensure their teams are up to date with the issues surrounding child protection, as it was formerly known. The initial release covers Level 1 training with a Level 2 course coming in August 2009.
Overview of the elearning content
All health professionals have a key role to play in safeguarding children and young people. Section 11 of the Children Act places a statutory duty on key people and bodies to make arrangements to safeguard and promote the welfare of those they come into contact with.
The elearning modules available through the NLMS will offer a clear and effective solution to achieve this aim and meet the National Workforce Competences.
The modules are broken down into short 20-30 minute learning sessions and are easily available to all learners whether at work or at home.
- Level 1 - Introduction to Safeguarding Children and Young People
Module 1 is available now. A single 20 minute elearning session, it covers the knowledge and competences required for Level 1 Safeguarding; recognition of the four categories of abuse and the appropriate actions healthcare staff need to take if they are concerned a child is being abused or neglected. - Level 2 - Recognition, Response and Record
Module 2 is due out in August 2009. Three 20 minute elearning sessions, it follows from Level 1, covering Level 2 knowledge and competences; recognising child abuse, being able to document cause for concern, knowing who to inform and understanding the Next Steps in the child and young person protection process
