Benefits
ESR is a single, national system that enables a consistent approach to all aspects of staff administration: HR, payroll, recruitment, work structures, absence, learning management and talent management. It automates all the interfaces to external agencies such as BACS and HMRC, as well as to other NHS systems like Contact and Pensions. It provides reports that permit an NHS organisation to develop and monitor strategic plans that will both improve staff morale and save money. It empowers individual employees, who can view and update their own records, request training courses and progress their career through their own online Personal Development Plans. Above all, it moves the emphasis from administration – paperwork and data preparation – to strategy – recruiting the right mix of staff and making sure they are developed, challenged and rewarded.
ESR is an important building block within the modernisation outlined in the NHS Improvement Plan and more specifically in the HR in the NHS Plan. It links with other NHS modernisation initiatives, ensuring consistency and accuracy by removing duplication of data.
At a national level, because all NHS organisations in England and Wales will use ESR, consistent reporting will enable benchmarking and continuous improvement. At a local level, a suite of Workforce Trust Board reports, along with a comprehensive Reports User Manual, will enable Trusts to get the best from ESR’s rich set of data.
