Home What is ESR? Benefits

Benefits

ESR has been designed and developed to be the comprehensive, integrated workforce management system which will deliver the Workforce Strategy for the NHS.

With all 586 NHS organisations now live on ESR, the focus is now on consolidating processes and practice to gain the practical and strategic benefits from using the rich functionality available in ESR. Each Strategic Health Authority has been allocated an Operations and Benefits Lead and Manager(s) to support NHS organisations across England and Wales in maximising the investment in ESR. The first stage of this is working towards Readiness Assessment 5 (RA5), the post go live check to ensure the initial implementation project is complete.

The benefits of the system are as follows:

Benefits for employees:

• Staff information is safe and secure within an encrypted system
• One employee record which contains complete information about pay and career development which can move with the employee when they change jobs in the NHS
• The system accurately calculates pay and entitlements
• Direct access to education and training opportunities and career development
• ESR can empower managers and staff by giving them direct access to their information on the system

Benefits for managers:

• One on-line system for all HR and payroll transactions, faster, more efficient business processes
• Interfaces with other systems e.g. eRostering, to provide comprehensive management of all workforce activity
• Information, the ability to report on workforce activity and costs to support local decision making
• Accurate workforce information with associated costs to support strategic workforce planning locally and nationally

Above all, ESR moves the emphasis from administration – paperwork and data preparation – to strategy – recruiting the right mix of staff and making sure they are developed, challenged and rewarded.

At a national level, because all NHS organisations in England and Wales are using ESR, consistent reporting will enable benchmarking and continuous improvement. At a local level, a suite of Workforce Trust Board reports, along with a comprehensive User Manual, available on the ESR Knowledge Base system (Kbase), enables Trusts to get the most from ESR’s rich set of data.

The ESR Benefits Film

An ESR film has been produced featuring Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. It focuses on the concept of ESR – how the system will work for an NHS Trust, how it works showing ‘best practice’ use of the system, and the benefits journey (implementing and using all the rich functionality available in ESR). It follows the employee lifecycle and shows a snapshot of the ‘model office’ use of ESR processes and reports. Footage from Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust covers the benefits journey and will complete the story, and the full picture of the real potential of ESR.
